Increasing my knowledge about Stoke on Trent
I am from India, and on a recent business trip, I had the opportunity to go to Stoke-on-Trent. My friend, Mike is from Stoke-on-Trent wanted me to visit his home. He would always talk about all the things this famous city of Staffordshire had to offer. I always made fun of him, as I had never heard of Stoke-on-Trent in India. I really liked Mike and did not want to disappoint him, so we planned a weekend trip to Stoke-on-Trent.
I had expected a sleepy town, but was impressed by all the infrastructure facilities in the town. We headed for his home and were very warmly welcomed by his parents. After a quick bath, he told his parents that I had never heard of Stoke-on-Trent. They were very surprised, but his parents told me that though I haven’t heard of Stoke-on-Trent, within a very short span of time, they will make sure I would remember this town for the rest of my life.
My introduction to Stoke-on-Trent started with my breakfast. I was given oatcakes, which is a very tasty preparation. It is a delicacy from Stoke-on-Trent, my respect for the town immediately grew, because a city which cooks good delicacies should be respected. During my conversation with Mike’s father, I was asked if I had heard about the Supermarine Spitfire, I sure had due to my interest in fighter aircrafts. The engineer of the fighter airplane was from Stoke-on-Trent.
I thought that was it, but was told it was just the start. The Captain of the ill fated Titanic was from Stoke-on-Trent who had chosen to go down with his ship. Respect to the Captain for having set an example. Mike switched on the music player and Slash strung his guitar like no one ever does, it is just sheer pleasure to listen to him. Mike winked and told me, Slash spent a few years in Stoke-on-Trent as a youngster before moving to the USA. Next playing was Robbie Williams, ha I knew it can’t be a coincidence, I asked so, Robbie is also from Stoke on Trent, and yes he was. That was getting too embarrassing for me, not knowing about the place all these greats hailed from.
After my breakfast, Mike showed me his Bike, and I just love Bikes. His father winked at me and said that the sparkplug was designed by an engineer from Stoke-on-Trent. I just wanted to run away hiding my embarrassment. I was given that opportunity by Mike, who asked if I wanted a ride. I readily agreed as I was raring to see the city of Stoke-on-Trent from where so many famous personalities came.
